Frequently Asked Questions

Is Gekoglass A Franchise?

The simple answer is no. We are flattered that people think gekoglass is a franchise. It demonstrates that we have a great brand and are very good at what we do. Please be assured we are not a franchise. We are a local, family run business established in 2014.

Why Has My Double Glazing Failed?

Double glazing is created by putting two panes of glass together with a thermally efficient spacer bar in between to form a gap between the two panes. The glass is then sealed using a hot adhesive to create a double glazed unit. The gas put inside the gap creates an insulating barrier that keeps heat in and the cold out.

A unit will fail when the seal on the double glazed unit breaks down, causing condensation inside of the glass unit, resulting in misted/ blown double glazing. We call it 'blown' or 'misted' in the trade.

The seal can break for a number of reasons, including general wear and tear, the age and condition of the glass and window frame or the location of windows. It could also be due to how the window was originally installed or a chemical cleaning material used on the window that over time has damaged the seal. Unfortunately there is no one real answer.

Should I Replace Failed Units?

Usually failed units are not noticeable until there is a large condensation build up. This will make it difficult to see out of windows and can be unsightly. These broken down units will be leaking expensive energy from any property into the environment, making heating systems work harder and therefore increasing energy bills. We think failed units are well worth replacing to restore the energy efficiency of windows and/or doors and reduce energy bills in the long term.

Do I Need To Replace The Frames?

The simple answer is NO!

It is a common misconception that everything has to be replaced when failed units occur. The glass units within the frames are completely removable and have nothing to do with the frame itself. As long as a frame is in good condition, gekoglass can simply replace the failed unit(s) for you. We replace every failed unit with A rated energy efficient units as standard. We are helping to save the planet because all the old glass goes to be recycled and the frames are not being removed therefore not going to landfill. It is also saving you money not replacing the frames and in the long run saving money on your energy bills too.

Why Is There Condensation On The Outside Pane Of My New Unit?

So gekoglass have fitted new A rated energy efficient glass at your property, everything looks great. But a few days later you notice condensation on your new units. This is nothing to worry about. The condensation will be on the exterior pane of glass and means the double glazed unit is performing exactly as it should and you will notice the condensation disappear throughout the morning as the sun rises. This phenomenon is a natural occurrence and not a fault with the glass or the window or gekoglass, and to reiterate is not due to your double glazed window failing as already mentioned.

This phenomenon often occurs in Spring and Autumn, when the glass temperature falls to a low level at night, with the moisture of a heavy morning dew condensing against the cold surface of the exterior glass. It demonstrates that your unit is very energy efficient as it is keeping the warmth in and the cold out.
